"Saint Patrick is most known for driving the snakes from Ireland. It is true there are no snakes in Ireland. As in many old pagan religions, serpent symbols were common and often worshipped. Driving the snakes from Ireland was probably symbolic of putting an end to that pagan practice."

Why is it that we celebrate someone who tore down a country's entire religion because he thought it wasn't the"right" religion. [I'm Irish, but this still doesn't seem reason to celebrate someone.]

I'm here in south east asia, and I'm about to leave home with my wife and my buddies for a night out to be filled with music, laughter, fun, food and drinks (yeah, Guiness stout)! We're dressed in Green/Gold and our Irish friends are overwhelmed about our plans for the night. Cheers!

One man could not tear down a whole country with merely a staff. But you can thank your British neighbors for attempting to wipe out the Irish Catholics. And I am not sure there are no snakes in Ireland. Would be a good question to put out on Yahoo.

Patrick was a great man, look at what he accomplished, he set out to change a country, to make it better and I believe within 200 years of him arriving Ireland was a changed country, he helped Ireland in a great many ways, education, medicine and much more, he was enslaved by the Irish and returned to help reform their culture, he was a great reformer

I believe that St.Patrick didn't take all those snakes and frogs and toads out of Ireland. I believe that St.Patrick might just be a silly tale made long ago to get children to fall asleep, and it got out of proportion.
