Your doctor probably won't give you a chair because he doesn't want you to lose functioning of your muscles. If you quit using muscles (i.e. ride in a chair instead of walk), your muscle mass with deteriorate and the use of your limbs will progressively get worse... and not using your joints will cause them to stiffen and get worse too. Probably not what you want to hear, but it's true.

As far as getting the chair, if you REALLY REALLY want to get one, call the companies that make the chairs. They usually go above and beyond to sell them and will contact your insurance or set up a payment plan for you to have one.

i think the doctor was kind to give you a parking permit,i think the reason he did not give you a motor chair is not because he is holding off but he wants you to be as Mobile as possible, myself self as i became less Mobile i started to get muscle atrophy were my muscles turn rubbery i had to have help to get up in the morning either i rolled out of bed to the floor to pull myself up which was painful or friends would pull me up on the count of three, others friends came to my room to motivate me to get up with tought love i received physical therapy also a little at a time i sat on a milk crate in pain with help from some pain medication ,it hurt but i kept on going a little at a time when i could not bare the pain i would stop rest and then start again, all spring and summer i would go out feed the birds and sit and stand working until it was like a miracle i was able to move around much better do to hard work and pain i am more mobile not to say i don't still take medication, but i made progress i can get out of bed myself i lost twenty pounds if you can stand it get mean with it .

Doctors dont GIVE you wheelchairs. Sounds like you need to get the help of an occupational therapist to do a review of your situation. Ask your doc for a referral to an OT.
You might be able to use a power scooter as electric chairs are very heavy and you will need the help of someone else to use it.

Your doctor still believes you have what it takes to be rehabilitated properly-he wants you to be up and about on your own power. Getting the chair will only make you more dependent and will make you lazy to do rehab.

he should send you to a physico therapist for one to work on your regaining your mussel strength. He probably just doesnt want to see you limiit your self. BUT if you are in serious need of one you should see another doctor or call your medical plan and see if they will cover or put money towards you getting one..

good luck
