because it is known as the "Festival of Lights," it symbolises the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind. Celebrations focus on lights and lamps, particularly traditional diyas. For Hindus, Diwali is not only a festival of lights but also is a special occasion to worship Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Mahabali.

Hope that is a good explanation

"Deepaavali is the RIGHT name- whether in the North/ South/ East/ or West INDIA."Diwali is a corrupted version mainly used in Hindi Speaking areas.Deepam=Light----Aavali= regularly arranged in a row -Sqaqre /rectangle /circle or like a garland according to one's artistic taste(Mano Dharmam)--One Very important festival celeberated by all Hindus all over the world. It is celeberated according to Hindu calender on "Aasweeja Krishna Chatur dasi(14 th day in the moon's waning phase) or next day Amaavasya(new moon day). The Western Gregorian calender is of no significance--it is why it is celeberated in October end or November beginning-if an "Adhika maasam" comes at the end of November also.Celeberating that day as a new year day also has a significance.Next day to Deepavali day according to "Chaandra Maana"(Lunar) convention "Kaarthika" Month begins. Some people have Kaarthika as the first month of the year as opposed to Chaitram (Lunar/or Solar convention). It is all very Scientifically calculated as per the movement of Celestial bodies as per Brahma Gupta/Arya Bhatta/Varaaha Mihira/Bhaskara I & II- Astronomical Studies -like "Surya Siddhaantam"---"Dasa Kittika"/ Bruhat Jadhakam etc
