Matt: this doesn't sound like paranoia - rather it appears to be a case of bullying. I don't know what to suggest because i'm not there. If I was and I could arrange enough support I'd have them surrounded by the other kids. But if.... this happened and they were sufficiently afraid, instead of beating them, I would have them each presented with a flower 'of peace' by the youngest victims. Sorry. I'm just a dreamer....but it might work.

I can't speak for all people, I can only tell you that when I meet a person for the first time I practice "benevolent skepticism". I will be kind and maintain a friendship until otherwise shown I should not. People are not black and white in their morals and ethics, it takes time to really get to know each individual who will be invited into another's so called "inner circle of friends". I try to look for good in a person and ignore the bad, unless of course, the bad is so outstanding that the person must be removed from my life.

I believe a health dose of caution is always good when approaching new people, however if you take it to the extent where you cannot function, then it is no good.
