I have a plant that grows in a vase of water. How can I keep the water from turning green a few days after I change the water. I have seen other people growing a plant this way and the water is always clear.

Keep the plant out of direct sunlight, change the water frequently and don't add fertilizers.

I go in and trim up the 'green' part of the roots of the plant... just take the plant out, and trim up the roots (not too short, leave a couple inches) and trim off the very tiny spindly almost hair like roots that are coming off the main roots... rinse really well under water before putting it back into your vase..... that should help a lot!
