If he has been sent off, I would find it hard to believe he had ever been in the running for Man of the Match.

Yes absolutley

If a player scores a hat-trick, sets up a couple of others and dominates the game before being sent off for a couple of harsh yellow cards in the last 10 minutes - would he deserve man of the match?

The actual award itself is not official and there is nothing in the laws of the game mentioning man of the match

Bryan Robson used to win man of the match for fook all, so he's probably won man of the match for getting sent off.

I think he can if he is sent off for something thats not a proffessional foul.
I remember Zidane in the world cup final was sent off but he was still contender for man of the match and i think the goden boot. Whether he did not get any of these awards had little or nothing to do with his head butt. So i think yes.

if a player sent off in a football match, he will not win the man of the match award.

Yes, technically he still can. Say he has been in the game for 89 minutes and suddenly he commits a SECOND foul then well, he gets sent off. But his 89minute game still counts. :)

Ofcourse....
they may play the best game of their career, make 1 stupid mistake or the ref see' something which he believes is malicious and he could get sent off.
Altho i cant actually remember any situation where this has actually occured.

Seems unlikely i know, but i seem to remember someone doing just that in 2006 world cup. Might of been one of the England matches. Or was it Zidane the French Bloke!?

Technically he can. If he has played out of his skin for 89 minutes, scored three, set one up and played flawlessly, then in the 90th minute picks up a stupid second booking (maybe throwing the ball away, handling to prevent a goal...) he can still win the MOM.
