It was transported back to Florida on the back of a specially reinforced 747 jumbo jet. The shuttle still sometimes lands in California due to weather concerns in Florida, it landed once at White Sands, NM missile range too. The plane shuttle combo will sometimes land at Biggs Army Airfield in El Paso, TX due to the weather being bad en Route to Cape Canaveral. The Enterprise, the only shuttle to never go into space was used as a test for the jumbo jet carrier and to also practice landing maneuvers during the early stages of development.

They placed it on the back of a 747. Then flew it on home. I lived out in So Cal. during those days. I would watch the landing. I loved that.
The sonic boom was amazing.
