Yes, they did make smart moves in the offseason. They now have one of the top outfields, a good pitching staff and strong all around players. With Alfonso on the team and Lou Pinella as coach I can expect a really good running game going on. Mark DeRosa can also play multiple positions too. And Ted Lilly was a good addition to the rotation.

They made good moves not smart moves. The smart moves would have been to begin to rebuild. There team is much improved but I don't know if they can contend. You have the Pirates who are easy yea but who else is?The Brewers are improved, the Reds were in contention last year ,Houston always does good and now you have the defending worl champion Cardinals. They have a shot.As for what I think their best move over the offseason was is getting Ted Lilly. Not Soriano they overpayed.Lilly can do twice as well as Prior or Wood can because they are always injured and he can win 10+ games. They have a good team but the only way they can win it,could happen,if Prior and Wood stay healthy all season. That is a big if since they haven't both been healthy since 2003.

They did what they had to do to become a better team. They spent a load of money but that's what teams have to do to be competitive. The only negative area is in their pitching. They should have and still can get rid of Prior and Wood. Too much time and money has been invested in these two and with very little return on that investment. If they can pick up a decent starter before the season begins I think they are good enough to win the division.

Yes they made great moves. People said they over paid but that is what baseball is these days. Its like buying a house in Southern California, we all know a 2 bedroom shouldnt cost $550,000 but it does, and if you want a house you pay for it. Baseball is the same way, we all know Lilly is not worth 10million a year, but if you want a decent player these days, this is what your spending.....
1 move i didnt like is the Jason Marquis. That was a waste of money, i would rather them signed Jeff Weaver to a 1 year 8 million dollar contract then the 21 millon they threw at Marquis for 3 years.

for the right players, yes, for the right price no. Ted Lilly is a ok pitcher, not the best, or even good, ok. Soriano was a huge acqusisiton. You should do anything to get him, cause he is a MVP, with his baserunning, and his power. He is adapting to the outfield, which is good. They just need to get a little better pitching, Zambrono cant lead the whole pitching staff. If they could have signed someone like Dice-K, (who hopefully does crap, LETS GO NYY), or another good pitcher who wa on the free agent market, that would have helped

As a Cardinal fan I gotta say they have improved their team more than any other team in the Central. Now with that said they needed to improve the most finishing in last place last year.I think they are at least a year away from post-season play.Sweet Lou will have the North Siders playing some good baseball in the next couple of years ,we will just have to see how it turns out won't we.The fans in Chi-town deserve a WS championship a100 years is a long time between drinks of water

In terms of here and now certainly. In the long term;??????? Younger talent is less expensive over the near term and even with the big names teams have to fill in the gaps. The Cubs may have priced themselves out of the long term. Just a thought.

Cardinal fans spreading love to the Cubs? Say it ain't so! Good moves include De Rossa and Soriano. Bad moves include re-signing Blanco (you could get a catcher that hits maybe), and Marquis (Cardinal fans laughed at this one). Real dumb move - well signing Wood again. He is hurt. Shocking.

It doesn't matter. It's the Cubbies. They haven't won anything in a century. If all other teams in baseball ceased to be, they still wouldn't win the Series. Since all other teams do still exist, they won't be higher than third in the division. And I'm being generous here.
