Any word of advice on how to develop good people skills at work (or in general) without being a kiss-@$$ , a hypocrite or a plain people-pleaser? What actually comprises "people skills"?

I am by nature quiet, shy, soft-spoken and kept to myself (probably mistaken as a snob by some) until I slowly warm up to people then I start expressing myself more.

I have been told by many (and modesty aside, I myself know) that I am a good worker, helpful to co-workers and attempts to work as part of a team. And I have developed on my own "emotional skills" which is knowing oneself and how one reacts to certain situations (then eventually learning to react positively). But somehow I know I am lacking this so-called people skills.

I know one can go further in life and in his profession if he has both emotional and people skills. It's not like I want a promotion to a top position at work or something but I just want to be able to relate to people well and not be mistaken as a snob.

I knew a person like you once...she was exactly what you discribe yourself. I even thought she might be a "prude" or something like that, but all that changed when the boss threw a party. I was totally wrong abour her, and the whole other staff was too. She opened up BIG time at the party, and after the party, people where more close to her than ever!
Seems like your work place needs a party so you can show your Fun side.

People skills have to be developed by practice and trial and error. The most valuable skill is the ability to "listen" to your employees and be honestly interested to what they say..eye contact is invaluable.Don't spread gossip, but the best thing I can tell you by someone who has been practicing people skills a long long time is the above..LISTEN, BE CONCERNED,EYE CONTACT.Something that will help you is take a course on sales. Learning how to sale will help you tremendously with your people skills. You can't make a big sale if you don't have people skills.

Are you quick to judge others critically? Probably not so it's a little vain to think that others are. Most decent people got better things to do than to do this and as for the others....that's kind of what they do so do you think that you'll ever please them anyway? "People who mind their own business, succeed because they have so little competition".

A little trick you can try is to pretend that your the person you want to be. "Act as you wish to seem". This is a powerful exercise and with practice, you can become the person you want to be. Don't dismiss the power of courage and change.

People are they same everywhere in that we all just want to be recognized. I used to be "quiet" also and have found that just by extending myself a little, people are much more receptive to requests or demands. Try to say "hi" before the other person does. Use their name if you can. Be supportive of others, and that will return to you in greater volume.

Be the way you want to be, unconditionally, and you will always feel good about yourself. Don't take things personally. Accept others as they are-trying to change them makes you feel bad and gets in the way of good relationships.

I work with "putting my best thought forward" in relationships, in my activities, etc. This allows me to enjoy my experiences and in turn makes my presence enjoyable for others.

I have had several supervisory training classes and the 2 things I have retained and applied are.....Be a real listener....Never assume anything...If someone just perceives something has happened it's real to them....
