What is your touchstone to the past?

For me it is my mother's costume jewelry -- mostly brooches, and her sewing basket.

My mother's smell on some sweaters she gave me...they have the scent of her favorite perfume...smelling that makes me remember when I was a little kid.

When my Gran passed away I inherited her beadwork and hide. My Grannie always carried her beadwork with her, a doubled shopping bag with some wonderful creation inside. Her last bit of beadworking before she died was sloppy and uneven... the work of a woman in a lot of pain.

I have thousands of tiny beads in my possession that were touched by the hands of a good, honest, caring woman. I use these beads to teach my students about their past... their hands are touching and becoming skilled by using the same beads that were touched by a master. I can't really accurately express what I am trying to say, but this is close: These beads are a touchstone to both the past and the future. Get me?

Maman's glass rolling pin. Reminds me of coming home from school to find noodles all over the table and chicken stewing. She made the best dang noodles. Her cookbook is one of those that doesn't tell you everything...like the butterscotch pie recipe does *not* tell you when to put in the butter. It assumes you know! I have that too - dated 1917! It was HER mom's!

I have nothing at all but my memories, I guess it's not all to bad though, keepsakes can be lost or stolen. My memories have stayed in a place that even my temporary insanity could not find them. and that's not in my head, I held them close to my heart.
