well colourful is ruled out for a start, keeping other colourful fish with bettas is risky, it can stress out the betta, or in the case of male guppys or platys, bettas aren't the smartest sometimes and mistake these for other bettas and may attack.
fish that can be kept with bettas tend to be smaller more muted quiet fish, in that size tank you could have a trio or foursome of Otocinclus (providing the tank is mature and has lots of algae for them to eat). Or a trio of Khuli Loaches may just fit, if you have a nice sandy substrate. Or a foursome or fivesome of Hasbrosus or Pygmaeus corydoras would work.
i would avoid any mid-swimming or top-swimming fish, anything that gets in the bettas way while he's patrolling is likely to get chased off, leading to a tank full of stressed out fish!
as with any betta tankmates, they must be observed carefully, some bettas don't mind them, others REALLY object to anything else in their tank!

ok first, Goldfish are chilly water fanatics yet betta are tropical fish and favor warmth water. next, a goldfish likely wont be too chuffed in a 10 gallon the position as a betta in undemanding words needs a 5 gallon to experience free. you won't be able to have both in a unmarried tank for one reason because they both have diverse water temp needs, and for yet another excuse is that if the goldfish receives too vast it may devour the betta. also betta get jealous of fish with vivid or vivid hues so the betta may likely %. on the goldfish a lot. you'll get one male betta or 2 lady betta. in case you want yet another style of fish in there then you definately can upload some such issues as Neon tetras they can stay with betta and a 10 gallon can be a sturdy length to save them in. Sorry if i replaced into rude.

You absolutely cannot put male and female bettas together unless you are breeding them!!! Either the male will tear up the female or the females will tear up the males! This is known on all the betta/fish forums so please do not do that for the safety of your fish! Some people have pulled it off, but that is a rarity.
If you are going to do 3 or 4 Otocinclus [also called ottos] and you don't have algae you can drop in a piece of cucumber or zucchini.
Neon tetras: you can do them but I would recommend doing 5 or possibly 6 because they are shoaling fish.
Liveyoung's petsmart site gives wrong information, you can either have one male betta by himself or a group of 4 or more females together (although this is risky as well)
Please visit the sites I have listed, they are very helpful and can help you with your question.

Any peaceful, non slow, and non showy finned fish. Platy, swordtail, cory cats, mystery/apple snail, Oto, small breed pleco, danio.....
Avoid large tertas, and barbs. Neon tetras may be too small and get label as food by a betta. (Assuming he can actual get one.) Slow moving fish (other than catfish, and suckerfish) are a bad idea as a betta may chase after any sort of fish. If the fish is small, and fast it can out swim a male betta untill he calms down. Avoid male guppy as they are showy, and slow.

I would go with 4 to 6 neon's (but that's me lol) almost any small non-aggressive fish can be kept with a Betta, EXCEPT GOLD FISH-they should always be kept by themselves, and fancy tail Guppy's because your Betta will probably kill them. (the color in their fins seems to set a male Betta off for some reason.)
I have apple snails in all of my tanks to clean. (I have one Betta who has adopted his, he will chase away any fish that is bothering it like it is his own personal pet,) and I have found that the snails do a better job of cleaning than most "Algae eaters"
Just make sure you don't over stock your tank.
EDIT: piggylove it is obvious that you havent picked up any usefull info from dad. Try getting the proper answer from him before you post please.

There are many fish you can keep with a Betta. It really depends on what you like. If you like bottom dwellers, then you can get some colorful Cory cats, but the colorful species of cories tend to be expensive. Other kinds of fish that can be kept with a Betta are guppies, platys, and sword tails and these fish are also very colorful (especially the fancy guppies.) You can also get some species of small tetras such as neons, black neons and cardinals. All these fish are also inexpensive. Avoid fin nippers such as barbs.

I've had success with mollies and swordtails in a 10-G with a male betta and a snail. I also kept him with an african dwarf frog and they left each other alone.
http://www.healthybetta.com/ they have a list of compatible fish and lots of tips.
Edit: wow, thumbs down on 4 years of experience with healthy fish? Interesting.
