Racism is a touchy subject for all races. As a white woman I sometimes think to myself that race plays more of a part than it should in our society. I hear African Americans claim something is done or not done because of race and I get angry because thats not always the case. I find it funny that generalizing that it's mostly white folks are racist is in fact racist against those who are white(thus proving your point invalid). I dont go around looking at people in terms of skin color (yes I realize that by being white I have certain priviledges-ok...). In reality it is not skin color that is more often than not the great divide within society but money! We discriminate against one another more on capital assests than skin color(though race, class & money are all intricately linked). You ask why are people still so racist? Because of myths that exist about different cultures, of poor representation of minorities on tv, lack of interaction between different people, because we are so afraid of offending someone based on race, because we have become such an isolated individualistic species that we dont socialize as we once did. Perhaps we should take advice from Dr. Martin Luther King- stop the finger pointing and blame and start working towards a better civilization instead.

Hey, we barely get along with people of the same color. Add to that, differences in skin color, language and religion and now you have real problems. No way around it. This problem has existed since the beginning of recorded history and will continue until the last dot is written in history. It's not mostly a "white" problem. That's only what you see in the little world you live in. Take a look in Africa and Europe and you'll see the big picture.

I think that racism applies to every single race in this world. Pointing the finger only at one group can only upset more people and make the situation worse. The only thing you can do, and should do, is try to not be a racist, and maybe that people around you, especially those who are racist, will feel shame and change their way. I feel so lucky and happy in Malaysia. We have three kind of ethnics ( Chinese, Indian, Malay) and I barely hear anything about racism.

Isn't the very statement "It's mostly white people who are doing all the hating" pretty racist, in and of itself?!?

The US, IMHO, is pretty good right now, racially speaking. Other countries are struggling with race more than we are, finally.
In Europe, there is anger/race riots between N. African Muslim immigrants and the natives.
In Japan, there is a historically maligned ethicity, called "Ainu", that remain discriminated against in the present day.
In Europe and Africa, there have been genocides between groups of people I can barely distinguish. Same deal with Israel. What's going on in Israel **IS** Ethnic violence.

Look around, discimination is EVERYWHERE in the world.
Why? Because all ppl are greedy, misanthropic, self-oriented, etc.
We should work against this, but don't fool yourself into thinking that the US is unique about these matters. People have to be taught not to be jerks, and even then, it's tough to fight innate human nature of wanting to reward people that are familiar to you-- be it religion, social class, race or anything else.
Obviously, I'm white. I tutor disadvantaged inner city elementary school kids [mostly black].
The girl I usually tutor-- I love her. She's wonderful, and I have the highest hopes for her. But nevertheless, her parents have taught her some pretty unfriendly things about my own race. Why? Because historically, I'm sure her parents have been on the receiving end of white racism. Nonetheless, it's painful when she parrots to me that "My mom said all white ppl are racist. Are you racist?" or, even once, "My mom hates all white people."

What I do is, I don't take it personally. I understand that there's hurt there, and that's why I'm in this tutoring thing, in the first place, because I want to counteract black conceptions of white racism. Still hurts, though. Racism is EVERYWHERE, in ALL racial groups. But you can't hate racists, because otherwise, you'll turn into one. Racism can only be fixed with gradual patience and understanding. If you hate back, if you become militant, you turn into one yourself.

I am a white American male... I couldn't care less about the color of somebody's skin, the country they came from or the god that they pray to!

I really can't agree with you about the white people doing all of the hating. I grew up living in a housing project... Yea, white kid in the projects! There is plenty of hating going on from all ethnic groups!

I think a more accurate statement would be:
"It is mostly narrow minded, insecure people doing all of the hating"

I don't get it! And I hate racist people! To be honest with you... I have never seen racism in Canada but last time I was in the U.S. I saw so muc racism { in schools, hallways park}!
Racism means attitudes, practices and other factors that disadvantage people because of their race, color or ethnicity. Racism can be directed against any race, color or ethnicity.

This has got to stop! I am so pissed off when I see racism that I just don't want to talk to anyone!

And I don't think that the whites are the racists! I think some from every culture are!

I hope this stops!

Thanx!

Have a great Day!

Do you actually think that any group of people would blame themselves for anything. Have you ever heard a politician say "It was our fault".

Everyone tries to pass the buck. When it gets passed for long enough we all just hate each other for what 'they' have done to our country when it was most likely a minority or not even them!

Basically, people are idiots and dont pull their head out of the sand to realise they are causing the problems and not an innocent section of society.

I disagree. i am white and not racist. and i have many 'colorful' friends. There are also many black people who are racists. to stop all that all people, nations of the world must unite in one and only then there will be no war, no racism, no hate, no anger. but in all times there were wars so we cant stop it at once, unfortunally. why? human nature.

peace :)

Its something that will never go away. We're in the 21st Century and have not moved on or progressed in centuries. And unfortunately, you'd probably get you're head bitten off for even asking this question, by alot of people who will be closed off about it. For as long as there are alot of uneducated people in the world there will be prejudices. Not much you can do about that. It stands with you to be as open as you can be and treat others as you would like to be treated and forget the rest.
