Why suddenly, everytime I sign onto the internet has my norton anti virus been disabled? Ok, I can enable it again but why would it suddenly have started disabling itself?

I've got Starware suddenly up on my screen and would like to get rid of that - it's just another search engine I think, no threat, just really annoying. I managed to delete the programme once before but have forgotten how i did it!

If you didn't ask for Starware or install it, its a threat. Something is disabling Norton, it sounds like you have a trojan.
Switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.
You need all these anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Plus;
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?q=ad+block&type=A&app=firefox - Adblock Plus
http://www.ccleaner.com - Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

If you do not have firefox get it now and use it instead of internet explorer so you dont get any more spyware http://securitynewsfromthenet.blogspot.com/
(1) If you have not already scanned your comp with spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html do that now .Update it and then run it so it gets rid of all the spyware and trojans in safe mode http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html
(2) Do an online virus scan to check if you still have viruses on your computer. And let us know if the online virus scan still finds any virus or spyware .

3) get another anti virus program if your present anti virus program is not protecting you any longer

I totaly disagree I have tried all the other over the years and still find Norton the best. The New 360. Having total protection it is the best ever.

Now that you have begun having problems with Norton they will not stop. Norton used to be the best. Now they live off of their past reputation.
A good alternative is to dump Norton and hook up with AVG 7.5 Personal or Avast. Both are good and free. www.cnet.com for downloads.

I had that before too it's really annoying I found if you leave it a while you can then activate it. I think another piece of software stops it like Adaware sometimes does

It could be that your PC/laptop had instructions to disable because it would interfere with your internet connection.
