What happened? Were the gates left open and people just wander in? I think everyone in prison paved their own path there.

A lot.
I reckon maybe 1 in 20 people who go to jail in the UK didn't actually do the crime. It sucks but that's the way it is.
Juries tend to believe the police even when the evidence is almost non-existent.

THE PRISONS ARE FULL OF INNOCENT FOLK OR AT LEAST IS WHAT THE SAYING SAYS. I SPENT 13 MONTHS WRONGLY ACCUSED FOR MURDER BEFORE BEING REEASED. AND I MET QUITE A FEW, MANY OF THEM WHO HAVE SINCE BEEN RELEASED DUE TO THE TRUTH COMING OUT. NOW ITS SO EASY TO HAVE SOMEONE ARRESTED. IF YOU TELL THE PLOD, THAT YOU HAVE RECIEVED CERTAIN THREATS FROM PEOPLE AGAINST YOUR LIFE, AND THAT YOU BELIEVE THESE THREATS CAN BE FACILITATED, THE PERSON WOULD BE ARRESTED AND FIRSTLY PUT ON AN OSMAN WARNING, BUT IT CAN PROGRESS TO LOCKING UP SOMEONE FOR A LONG TIME IF YOU WERE CAPABLE OF TELLING A GOOD AND CONVINCING STORY. BUT THESE PEOPLE KNOW WHO THEY ARE AND WE WILL SEE THEM SOON. (OOPS!!!)

Nobody knows. They were sent to prison because they were judged guilty. British law isn't harsh but no doubt there have been mistakes.
