My system is making a strange clicking noise – the noise starts as soon as I switch on the system and is quite constant. What could be the problem?

I would guess it's your hard drive acting up.

Try copying a large file from a CD or DVD to your hard drive & see if this changes or stops the sound .... that would tell you if this is the case.

If so ... start backing up your personal data ....

Computer get dusty inside. I'd suggest taking the cover off and blowing it out real good with canned air.

WARNING! Turn it off and unplug it before doing this so you don't cause any damage.

When cleaning, pay particular attention to fans on the CPU and the Power Supply. Dirt builds up on the blades from running all the time. Also, look to see if any wires may be touching a fan blade.

If cleaning doesn't eliminate the clicking, it could be the hard drive or the CD-ROM drive.

Sounds like a fan to me...like the other said...your goingt o have to open up the computer case and try to hear where the noise is coming from....if it's a fan..they are cheap and easy to find and install...if it is your HD than you might have bigger problems....I would suggest backing up all your important files and photos and whatever and than buyig a new HD...then format and reinstall Windows (if that's your OS) and go forward....good luck!

The fan cooling your processor may be impeded by a stray wire on its path. Try opening up your cabinet and check whether this is the case.

It could be one of your fans. You are going to have to open up your computer case and listen. This will allow you to find out witch component is acting up.
