The surprising answer is that India is already heading in the right direction and at a very fast pace.
For example, in 2000, the average income level was only $450 and 30% of the population was living below the poverty line.
Today, average income is $750 -- double that in 2000! While $750 does not sound like much by US standards, the rapid growth in average Indian income is remarkable.
In addition, incomes of almost all Indians increased over the past few years, and only 5% or so now live below the poverty line. If India continues to grow at its current rate, poverty will be effectively eliminated in just a few years.
Of course, I'm talking about absolute poverty -- which the World Bank defines as living on $1 per day. Relative poverty that we see in advanced countries -- like the US -- is another story....

Giving to help provide basic needs, but I think education is the key. Educate and give them a choice, a means to get out from the situation they are in. There will always be poorer and richer, but that doesn't mean it's right to turn a blind eye. I'm from Australia and we have poverty here, but poverty here is nothing like poverty in some parts of the world, including India. Education and skills!!

India has most number of richest people in Asia. India has highest number of poor people in the world. Poor in India are more malnourished than in west african Nation and India is not poor country.
Answer I think it IHT - in UK and Japan they call it inheritance tax. This would help. India tax GDP ratio is one of the lowest in world. We are under taxed. Our tax laws facilitates rich becoming richer and poor become poorer.
What we can do is vote properly. (if we are Indian citizen.) Avoid CPI (clowns party of India) (sorry if being rude)get to power. They are self obsessed lot. They irrational and have no principal. They never allow any government to do their job. Even if it is their government or any other parties.

Something you may not know, but where I am in Australia, we have a large population of Indians. These people are quite wealthy, and dont feel the need to help out back in India, so what chance have you got , to make the rest of us do so??

Why is it our job to help the poor in India? Don't they have a government? Sorry, I think we should help our own folks first. "charity begins at home". We as Americans buy their products and outsource jobs to them, the rest is their responsibility. I know that sound cold, but we can't save the world.

the only way to get rid of poverty is to have zero population growth for a long while. That would solve many problems.

We are already helping them by outsourcing american jobs. Get called lately by a credit card company using Indians or have a contractor from India come in and update your computer system. That's fine, they are very intelligent people who deserve better, but, it also makes for a lot of americans to be unemployed and a lot of families struggle.

Sorry....but I believe there are many poverty stricken citizens in the USA that deserve the help first and foremost before one ventures off to the aid of other countries. The USA is the "Land of Opportunity" FOR FOREIGNERS. Those of us whose families migrated here in the late 1800's and early 1900's had struggles and there was no aid for them.
