we put him back in the woods, even though i'm worried he'll get eaten, it was the first lizard in the wild i'd ever seen. we figured if we want a pet lizard we'll get one from the pet shop instead.

you should really put it back in the wild. but to keep a small lizard like that you could use a seed incubator sand and a small lamp and a rock. remember its a lizard so it needs to get water from its surroundings. put a few drops of water around the tank on pieces of rock, feed it kale which is a cheap variety of cabbage and waxworms. you can get waxworms from any petshop that sells reptiles. waxworms will pupate so any waxworms that burrow into the sand fish them out and get rid. lizards being cold blooded need to bask before they can eat they will be sluggish but once they become warm them buggers can move so never leave the lid off. get yourself a ladybird book on lizards. even a childs book is an invaluable tool. i kept a common lizard for 3 months before it escaped, watching them eat a waxworm is amazing.

Lots of people probably keep these as pets. Remember they hibernate so if you do keep it and let it go, do it whilst its still warm enough for it to find somewhere to hibernate! I work with these little guys and they are so cute! Its amazing to watch them eat. They eat insects that you can collect from the garden as long as you dont spray insecticides, herbicides etc around! Dont worry about the tail - it will grow back. Or you could try just observing them in your garden. Enjoy!

as it is wild, it will not last long in captivity it will most probably become stressed and die, so best thing to do is give it to your local vets and let them deal with it.
