I always have a ready smile, I see it as part of my mask for the outside world and the best way to connect with other people as it gives signals of being approachable. I like smiling too, it makes me feel good about myself and the world. But I totally get that other people aren't as smiley at all and that sometimes my happy disposition can really hack people off good style.
I think that people who don't routinely smile are probably more cynical in human nature or see it as a weakness to dispaly their emotions too readily. It could also be due to being self conscious (bad teeth/breath) or feeling globally sad, people who are having a bad time of it are not going to want to smile just to pacity another.
However, those idiots that come up to you in clubs and say 'smile, the world hasn't ended you know' need to die!
I don't think anyone has the right to push their own mode of behaviour onto anyone else. You really don't know what is going on in a person's life. They may not be smiling but they may have really struggled just to get out of bed that morning and the added effort of an outward display of happiness may be something they just don't have in them. People just don't realise the effect that one throwaway comment or non verbal action can have on another person.
They could be smiling inside even if not on the outside, or they could be screaming on the inside and it's taking all of their control not to be screaming on the outside as well. So, I would say, either they smile back at you or they don't, but best to leave it well enough alone!

Only animals do not smile so if they do not smile they are not humans.
Each and every living organism has problems and so do we.
Smile is something tat freshens your brain cells and makes you to be fresh, think fresh and also act fresh. They might be one r a couple of people who never smile in front of others(They are acting for sure). There is at least a second where they smile, enjoy some or the other.

I think that she thinks that she looks better when she doesn't smile, and that the mean and moody look is in. However I think that she needs to smile and eat more and then maybe more people will start thinking that she is human again

Impossible to never have smiled, even if it is from the inside. These Crabby, Grinchlike, Upset and or Work Driven individuals, smile, yet, to spite all of us, they do it in places where noone will see them, say an elevator, wish I had tapes of Ted Kennedy on a mirrored elevator by himself. lol

It may not be a psychological reason, but a physical one. Some people have bad teeth or hate their own smile. So they either dont smile at all, or cover their mouth when they do.

I hate my smile actually. But maybe it's just that they don't find funny things very humorous or they're occupied with something else by their emotions (like sad, worried, angry, etc.)

I think that some people take it as a sign of weakness to smile (what a pity). And of course, some just aren't happy....or appreciative, or caught up in themselves and don't care to make others happy, or don't think that they matter enough to make others happy, or don't think that they deserve to be happy. We are truly odd creatures.

Differrent personality types is the key there. Some personalitues are more outgoing and appear happier and certain other personalities are more inrtrospective and seem more somber. I don't think it is always a matter of being happy or sad.
