The movie 300 is not historically accurate. #1, it's based on a historical fact that's been turned into a legend so the original story is already probably inaccurate in many ways. #2, the legend was made into a graphic novel (e.g. comic book for adults) so that added even more distortion. #3, the movie is told from the viewpoint of a survivor, who starts out narrating the story and, in the end, leads the 2nd wave of attack, the guy who lost an eye. That explains him describing the rhino and stuff as kind of "bigger than life."

So it wasn't historically accurate? Who cares? It wasn't the flipping History Channel, it was a movie, it's art!

The basic plot is true. 300 spartans and a few thousand greeks VS millions of persians. Greek warriors were used sparingly if at all and most fled when the persians found an alternate route. There is also evidence to suggest that they did use animals in combat such as elaphants and rhinos. Mutilation of the body was also common, hence the guy with sharpened iron in his arms. Although there were no goat people. I can promise you that. Alot of it was over the top, but the basics were true. Including the physical aspects of xerxes. He really was a large man. He was also a bi-sexual as were most of the men.

the basic premise of the movie is true, but the presentation was fiction for dramatic effect.

anyone who takes the movie for 100% truth is mentally deficient.

yes 300 Spartans, 700 thespians and an army of 3000 Greeks held a pass for 3 days against a massive Persian army.

the end result was a united Greece and the foundation of modern democracy.

no there were no monsters and there were no guys with Axe hands.

If I wanted historical accuracy, I'd watch the History Channel. I loved 300, it was glorious! Very entertaining and inspiring!! But it was fiction as far as I'm concerned, just loosely based on ancient history. Do I think Leonides was buff and had a queen just like that actress or that an oracle danced around in a diaphanous gown and twitched like that? Not really. Did it stop me from enjoying the film? No way!

Well, its based on the Battle of Thermopylae, which occured just before the Persian War. 300 brave Spartans held a mountain pass for three days. The Persians, however, found a different route and proceeded to slaughter every last Spartan. The battle was significant as it provided time for Athens and other city-states to prepare for the surge of Persian forces.

I read Herodotus' account of the Battle of Thermopylae in his Histories when I was age ten. Read it if you want to see the earliest historical account. Movies always take liberties with stories. 6000 greeks delayed the Persian horde (5,000,000 total with servants says Herodotus) for days in the narrow pass at Thermopylae. Then, Ephialtes lead the 10,000 Immortals across mountains to attack the Greeks from behind. Most fled, but Leonidas and his 300 picked Spartans stayed along with 1000 Phocian allies. When weapons were broken, Spartans fought with fists and teeth. They were supermen who broke Persian skulls with their fists. They were overwhelmed by arrows at last after killing 3600 Persians in that final battle. Darius I invaded Greece in 490BCE and was badly beaten by the Athenians alone. His son Xerxes gathered a larger army and attacked in 480BCE. That brings us to the mighty 300.
