how does a cracked head or leaking head gasket let the oil from the reservoir into the firing chamber?

I don't think Rich P. has a chain saw or has ever used one. Take the bar and chain off and see if the oil will leak from the reservoir over night. There may be a seal leaking. I have a Stihl apart in the garage, I will look at it and I can email you if you like. Maybe you can help me with mine as to why it will not fire when I pour gas in the plug hole and there is spark. I cover the plug hole with my finger and there is compression it may not be enough for combustion though. I have even tried ether. I have three Stihls and this is the only one to give me a problem. I do have a Stihl Pro that I have to run on half chock for awhile.

the head sits directly on top of the cylinders..oil is pumped to the valves and springs to keep them lubed..if you have a cracked head, oil could leak around the the gaskets and directly in to the upper cylinder.
I assume your engine smokes a lot. Thats the indicator you are leaking into the cylinders firing chamber...other wise you are just leaking it around an engine gasket or on your oil pan.
If you have a cracked head all you can do is replace or repair it.
