I'm trying to make a 9pin null modem cable out of serial leads I have. To load software to the satellite receiver, Apparantly its wires 2-3 that get changed, so I cut the lead in 2, striped the wires, soldered 2-3 and 3-2, soldered all the rest of the wires back together and taped individually using insulating tape, but it still does not work, any knwo where i've went wrong?

A null modem cable allows you to connect your PC to another nearby PC or serial device using its modem protocol. A popular use of null modem cables is for setting up "head-to-head" gaming between two players at different computers in the same room. (A null modem cable is limited to 30 feet in length.)
a signal protocol between a Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) - usually your PC - and a Data Communications Equipment (DCE) - or your modem. The signals are transmitted on a set of lines, each of which has a function in the "talk" that the DTE and DCE do back and forth. One line each way is for data; the other lines are for different "statements" that one end of the communication sends to the other. For example, the DTE sends the DCE (usually a modem) a "Request to Send" signal on the RTS line and the DCE replies with a "Clear to Send" signal on the CTS line

I admire your patience but, seriously, next time you want to do this go to Maplin and by an adaptor.
I've re-wired so mant 9 and 20 pin connectors that the fun has completely gone out of it.

What you did was to forget to reconfigure that RTS/CTS lines as well as the signal lines.

Del Pier has given halpful advice. The other answerer was only after "points" and is a dick-head..

Between connectors 2-3, 3-2, 5-5 (TX, RX and GND), Then at either end 7-8(RTS-CTS), 6-4-1(DSR-DTR-DCD)
