I have a bachelor's degree in engineering, but I do not like it. Rather, I like to write. I wish to do a master's degree that's got to do with writing. I want to learn all kinds of writing - creative writing, writing articles, copywriting, etc. What degree is suitable? Degree in creative writing? Journalism? I'd like to do a master's degree that'll get me a job that's got to do with writing. Also, is it possible for an engineering graduate to do a master's degree that's related to writing? Any advice? Thanks.

Good writing is an acquired skill. I think I
am average, or a little above if you are
not comparing me with a seasoned word
specialist. Most people know that when
you read a modern book the end product was
written by a hack. I've never written a book,
but written just about everything else and
have been writing since I was ten or eleven.
If you get a Bachelor of Arts in English, you
can choose an area of concentration in
composition, or whatever it is called now in
this brave new world. You might find a
creative writing class as a continuing education
course, which would not cost you much money.
Then you can find out if this is really for you
before your outlay becomes too great and you
discover later that writing isn't for you.
But the two main things I advise to you were
advised to me tersely by an English teacher
with a master's. Read, and write. Sounds
absurdly simple, but those are the two most
important things. And if creative writing is your
favorite area, read classics, poetry written before
the 50's or earlier. Writing everyday was insisted
upon by this teacher, that's the key.
If you want to become a journalist, the normal
view of magazines, radio stations, and television
networks is that they want you to have the degree.
There are rare cases when one is good enough
to be hired as a journalist.

As far as i'm concerned no degree really helps for anything in life .....the only way we learn is by DOING !!!
Writing skills do come naturally , but don't go a waste your money on a degree just to improve that ...there are tons of great books out there that won't break the bank to help you with writing !! Good luck and i wish you all the best with your new found career !!
