Preparation is key, make sure you have a good top soil, loosen soil and rake smooth. If you have a Feed store in you area they can give you recommendations on what type is best for your area. Sow seed according to directions, rake lightly to mix with soil. It helps to put a light layer of straw on after seeding as it helps to keep moisture in and speeds germination, also dissuades birds from eating all you seed. Water lightly in the mornings, you should see nice results within a few weeks. Avoid walking on as much as possible. Don't try mowing until at least 3-4 inches, and don't set your mower less than 3 inches. The first year the grass will seem a bit wispy, but as root systems developes you should have a healthy lawn. Also, you don't have to pick up straw, you can leave it on when you mow, serves as a good mulch and helps to retain much needed moisture, it will disappear in no time. You may want to consider sodding the area if it's not too big and cost is not a factor. This method has always worked for me.
