Hmmmm, you say your friend's applications stands out from the rest... but is the person what the employers are looking for? Often, chances are that she got an interview because of the fact that she was black.
The application is not the only thing to getting a job or position... you also have to present and sell yourself correctly.
Also you omit the fact that women in general are still discriminated against and aren't offered the same pay as a males in most instances. This is still a male dominated society, and women in general still have to work harder for equality.
As I've seen so often, you can't go to a job interview walking in like you at "da club", talking ebonics, and thinking that "affirmative action" guarantees you a job or position.
I hear black people often saying the white folks got this, or the white folks got that... yet they can have the same things if they would apply themselves and meet the set requirements instead of wanting the "hookup".
Black people often complaining about foreigners coming to this country taking all the jobs... well the jobs were here before they came here, but blacks didn't want them.
With black people, the blame is never on themselves concerning their woes. Yet, the only ones that keep black people down are black people. Black people are their own worst enemies. No other culture or race hurt each other more than black people. Look in the black neighborhoods and over in "the motherland" for proof.
For instance, before a black person leave home, they set into place a series of locks and bolts to prevent theft. They get into their cars, drive down the street with doors locked and windows rolled up worried about carjackers.
But let me ask you this. Do they envision a white guy breaking into where they live? Do they envision a white guy carjacking them? An honest answer proves my point!
Million black men march to D.C. and proclaim they were going to do better by black kids, not call, treat, or look upon black women as "bit___s", take responsibility, etc.. Yet what has changed? Where are the black men in the schools (besides the gym and athletic field) taking part in teaching black youth? You are still hardpressed to find black males teaching in the classrooms in most schools.
Oh well, maybe when they get their repatriation checks from the government for slavery, everything will be okay, right?
Most black Americans can't even find proof of slavery in their family background in America. So there will not be that many government checks issued... if that's what black people are waiting for.
Bill Cosby spoke some of these same truths and it stirred anger among many black Americans. Many reading this will probably be angered at what I have said here also.
However, I'll still go on being a man, in every sense of the word morally, socially, responsibally, and Biblically... whom happens to be Black.

Well, I'm white and I must say I don't really agree with your answer. I've worked with many different people, and there are good and bad in all races and colors. One of the brightest people I ever knew was a black girl I went to college with many years ago, and I would work with her, for her, or hire her for a job any day of the week over most white people I know. I'm sorry if your friend seems to be getting a raw deal, and we all know there are still a few people out there that are racially prejudiced, and this is on both sides (not just whites against blacks), but there are many more that think that the color of their skin doesn't matter, but their qualifications and personalities do when job hiring.

You see, this is the point she is making. Forget about the grammar, and just answer the question. It is a serious issue and we cannot address it if we don't accept that it does happen. I have seen many people who use bad grammar, yet they secure jobs because the skin is seen before anything else. I myself, might make certain mistakes when typing on a screen, just like some of you who have in your answers. Another problem is one has limited characters in which to ask a question that makes sense.
For the first of you, who successfully managed to answer the question - well done, because your answers were encouraging to this lady. However, the rest of you are doing exactly what she is talking about and are in DENIAL. Your arguement is called a STRAW MAN. In case you don't know what it means, you are distorting her arguement to exploit weaknesses.
Read the question and answer it.
My answer:
This is a sad situation, but it is true. They can deny it as much as they want. Even in this 21st Century, you would have imagined that we would have past this situation where one has no control over trivial things like skin colour, but oh no, discrimination is well and alive.

I think you are generalizing sterotypically in your question. This is not the way the majority of the world works and that is a fact. Instead of worrying about this, you should really look into some schooling to help with your grammar, sentence structure and also how to speah correctly (Because if you speak as you write/type, it is no wonder you are having trouble with employment.) For example: What IS the white people afraid of? should be What ARE the white people afraid of? There are NUMEROUS mistakes just like this throughout your posted question and if your "friend" speaks and writes in this fashion, it is no suprize prospective employers are balking at hiring you or your "friend." I hear too many blacks trying to blame the whites for their problems and not taking responsibility for them themselves. Of course I realize that is the easy way out. There are instances like you tried to explain out there in the world, but I am certain not to the extent you are trying to claim. There are many instances of blacks discriminating also, but I don't hear too much of that being brought up. Hmmmmm, for instance The Black Miss America pageant. Now if that isn't racist and discriminatory somebody please tell me what is? Now let someone start a White Miss America pageant and see how long it is before Jesse Jackson and the NAACP is trying to bust their door down! A black man can say the "N" word, but if a white man does it is a crime. Talk about your double standards. I don't think it should be used by anyone myself. There are many, many more examples I could list for you to prove my point. I am just so sick and tired of one race whining and crying that it is the fault of another race for their lot in life, no matter what race it is. Until it stops and more people become better educated there will continue to be problems like this unfortunately. It's a darn shame because the way I see it in this world we are all one and the same - human. Everybody's one of us!!! I wish you and your "friend" the best of luck. Look into furthering your education though, it will help.

I say she, wouldn't have enjoyed working for the type of people who would do that sort of thing anyway. Keep looking, when you find the company that try that kind of BS you're in.
This sort of behavior also happens to the "white guys" too. Companies will often advertise and then try to short change the applicant. If you accept the job, it never works out, you will find that the company will continue to shortchange you; hours, benefits, and whatever else they think they can get away with, without you quitting. And, if in the end you quit, they just do it to your replacement.
Color is not an issue, with the companies, their morals are. And when you find that a companies morals are weak, the quality of their leadership is weak. With weak leadership, you run into the kind of guys where color may be the issue, because that kind of behavior is not corrected.

this is very bad if it's actually happening as you describe it. But what kind of companies is she applying to? Nowadays most professionally-run companies don't go in for the sort of racism you describe - it's not in their interests to do so. Their priority will be simply to get the best applicant in that position. I wonder if perhaps your friend's interview technique is not as good as her written applications. Maybe it's her personal presentation skills as opposed to the fact that she is black? Do you think that could be the case? Could her oral communication skills do with polishing up? Does she dress professionally? Is her spoken English professional? Maybe you could help her here by role-playing interviews to give her the chance to practice being in interview situations.
Oh and by the way, I'm white and I do think that a white person with no qualifications and no job is lazy (how can they have years of free education and not get any qualifications!)

I am sorry that you're finding racism is affecting your career, but ranting about it on Yahoo just won't solve any of your problems. There are many people who are discriminated against for many reasons, and narrowing your field of vision until it becomes "whites against blacks" is going to make you bitter and less employable than ever. Think of solutions, such as finding a company to work for that has anti-racist policies, or moving to a part of the country where there is more racial diversity, or even starting your own business (and then you can hire your own black employees, thus becoming part of a solution to the problem). I agree that racism is a terrible thing and a huge waste of talent, but what is also a waste of talent is complaining about something without taking action about it.

Why aren't black people given a chance? The answer is simple-- some people are bigots and stupid. And you already knew that. Why would anyone turn down a qualified person, especially during a time where it is hard to find qualified people with the right skills?
And, by the way, if someone is turned down because their skills seem comparable to another person's but that other person is asking for less money, your friend(s) will get turned down, not for race or gender but becuase they are overpriced . . . at least to that employer.
