I heard the rule of thumb is 2 to 3 hours for every hour spent in class. Although, I do not study this much I probably study roughly 15 hours a week when I spend 21 hours in class (and one hour in an organic chemistry II study group). But I do pretty well in my courses because I have been recommended to tutor several, work as a lab assistant for one and my instructors tend to give me really good feedback on assessments and major assignments. I would like to study as much as is recommended because I know that it would make me a better student. That is it will keep me from having to study so much before a test, help me get brownie points for participating in class due to preparing ahead of time, and help me to retain the information but don't see how I can because I procrastinate a lot.

It really just depends on the class and your understanding of the material in the class.
