With ASP.NET 2.0, you have the option—using Visual Studio 2005—to create an application with a virtual directory mapped to IIS (http) or a standalone application outside the confines of IIS (file system).

Visual Studio 2005 (and Visual Web Developer Express Edition, for that matter) includes a built-in Web server that you can use for development. Choosing File System leads to using the built in web server rather than IIS.

Hope this helps.
