Hi dear Dennis W!
I read your question and found that you have a problem with networking.
You mean that when you connect your 2 computers on the router(HUB), they begin to work to gether. but when you connect them to each other (not to router), they have problem.
In this way I believe that you have LAN cards. 'cause this is imposible to connect 2 computeres to each other with out LAN.
So I know your answer. You can define one of your computers as an ADMINISTRATOR so that this computer support the other. If do this, one of your computer is called server, and the other is client.
well, in this case it is recommendet that, define a computer as server that is more powerful with CPU,RAM,Main board, and so on. also it is recommendet to install a fresh copy of system software( Like windows XP,Windows server 2003, Linux,Unix,...) to your server.
If any question, leave me a message.
Be succeeded every time.
Ba bye

If each works seperately but not when connect at the same time and you get a limited or no conectivity message, you probably have both computers set to the same IP address or the router is not sending the correct address to them.

In networks each computer HAS to have A seperate different IP. If you are connecting to a router it should be suppling automatic addresses (Called DHCP) In your router setup you need to check that it is set as a DHCP server (should be a check box on the setup screen somewhere. Be sure it is set to allow enough address for all computers you expect to connect.

Be sure each computers network settings are set to get a DHCP (automatic address) Click on the little computers that tell you limited connection. That should open a screen showing a General and Status screen. Check the Status, you will be able to read the IP address that has been given. If it is blank or reads 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then you do not have DHCP turned on. Go back to the general screen click on properties at the bottom of the screen. In the next screen that opens srcoll down to Internet (TCP/IP) click on that. In the screen that appears be sure you check the box that says obtain address automatically. Then click apply.

Now if all these items are correct but you still are getting the message, check your eithernet cables one could be a crossover cable which will not work with a router. Replace the one that does not work with a new one.

Good luck these are sometimes just really "fun" to figure out.
