I get hiccups all the time, once had them for 7 hours non-stop.....

No one knows why some people are more prone to hiccups than others, it's something to do with the little flap of muscle at the top of the oesophagus.

There are many techniques used for getting rid of hiccups - it's just trial and error.....

holding your breath
an unexpected shock (boo!)
a spoonful of granulated sugar
a drink of water from the wrong side of the glass or upside down (latter works for me - but the water often goes up my nose!)
eating something
lying on the floor
standing straight against a wall and relaxing.....

hope it works... especially if you have what we call 'hurty hiccups!'

I just discovered a great remedy. Get someone to put one hand on each side of your spine, right between the shoulder blades, and press (pulling away from the spine) for a few seconds. It releases pressure on the nerves that cause hiccups. Works every time. We had a slumber party last night, and two of the giggling little girls got bad hiccups, and this stopped both instantly

The quickest solution that I've utilized is drinking water from the opposite side of the glass.

If that doesn't work, perhaps a teaspoon of sugar or a slice of lime with a couple of drops of bitters--anything to change your focus (take your mind off the hiccups and concentrating on accomplishing a different task).

In most cases hiccops start when the diaphram isn't allowed to fully expand. So begin by being sure you are sitting up straight all the time.
To get rid of them, take as deep a breath as you can. Hold it for the count of 17 seconds. Then slowly let it out. That should do it. I learned this at 16, now I'm 55 and I've only had to do it twice 2 times. Stand up straight, though, or the oxygen cannot reach your diaphram.

Get someone to scare you... (has to be spontaneous and they cant let u know when they're going to do it)...

I used to get hiccups if i laughed too much or drink something which was too hot..... so if the cause of your hiccups is similar.... try being miserable.. and always drink cold drinks ;-)

Hiccups are caused by extra air in your stomach, usually caused when we eat in a hurry, and don't chew properly. I get them all the time.

You then need to get rid of that extra air, so drink plenty of water......................

The only cure that has ever worked for me is sugar. About a half teaspoon, just let it melt in your mouth, swallowing just the sweetened saliva. Calms my stomach down immediately.
