Helen Mirren (born Ilyena Vasilievna Mironov), to play the Queen (from The House of Windsor, a branch of the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha strain). Who said the British were insular!

Yes - was wondering if a clip on her swipe at the good city of Manchester to the Chinese would be shown! As you say, Barbara - we're shown a watery version!

I think this film was brilliant. Helen Mirren played HRH, The Queen brilliantly. I think there is a lot of truth in the film - and the dealing of what happened during the funeral of Princess Diana shows how hard 'we' the public were on the family. Elizabeth II had been brought up to serve the people - she had no choice in the matter. And she had been brought up that during a funeral (whoever it was within the family) that the flag will not fly at half mast - the flag is only to tel the people whether or not she is there in residence.

I know people have modernised - but why should she have to completely modernise. Perhaps when Prince William comes to throne - things might change - as he has been brought up in 'modern' Britain.

All parts played in the film were done brilliantly and I could really believe that they were really like that in true life. BEST FILM OF 06

No movie could tell the truth about the Royal Family.

Mirren's portrayal was amazing. She is an absolutely stunning woman who is truly as elegant as they come.

Remember, however, it is a movie. As with everything else, it is a fantasy, not the reality of Elizabeth II. Not by a long shot. Mirren portrayed the queen as the queen wants to be remembered.

It's fantastic.
I bought it on DVD earlier this week.
I thought it was wonderful at the Golden Globes when Helen Mirren got best actress in a TV adaptation for Elizabeth, and then best actress in a film for playing Elizabeth II.
If she lives another 400 years she may get best actress for playing Elizabeth III

I thought it was an excellent movie. It was one of the best movies that I saw in 2006. I loved the way she played Queen Elizabeth II. I thought it was great when she won a Golden Globe for best actress and then her fellow screen actors gave her an Oscar. She outdid herself. I hope she does meet Queen Elizabeth.

Her father may have been Russian, but I guess she is as British as you can get. She's even Dame, right?
