A pelvic exam is done to check the uterus, ovaries, cervix to make sure there is nothing abnormal like masses such as a cyst is growing. They also check the shape of the ovaries and the uterus to make sure there is no abnormality there such as enlargement (meaning to get bigger such as with swelling).

As for when the right time will be to have one it will be around 18 or 21 usually but you need to discuss this with you mom as well and also your dr. If you think that something is physically wrong pls let your mom know so that she can help you to get the help you need.

First, you should go meet your new OB/GYN. Talk to him/her to make sure you're comfortable with them (it may take more than one meeting). There are doctors and nurse practitioners that specialize in adolescents in this field. At the first appointment, make sure your parent is in the room, just to get the intial questions out of the way, so you're all on the same page. After the first appointment, go talk to the doctor or nurse practitioner yourself. A lot of times it's easier to talk to them without your parent present in the room.

I would recommend if you're going to be sexually active, to talk about protecting yourself with birth control and the new HPV (which you get from men by having sex) vaccine.

A pelvic exam is a yearly internal exam for women that checks your cervix, ovaries and vaginal area for any abnormalities.

I would recommend that you establish a relationship with your doctor or NP now, that way you can get comfortable with them when you start to have questions about your body.
