This is a non-scientific answer, based purely on observation and speculation.

Background:

I come from a family of reasonably bright people. I have often marvelled at how totally disorganized they appear to be.

I have worked in a corporate environment where I have seen both slobs and neat freaks. I have rarely seen a slob who was not smart. (Note, however, that "dumb" slobs would probably have been laid off).

My assessment:

1. Slobs lack the advantage of rule-based organization. If they want something, they must "remember" where it is, since there is no likelihood of finding it in "one pile or another."

2. Neat freaks are more efficient, because it takes only slightly longer to put away or "file" something than it does to just drop it, but "finding it" next time it's needed is easily done.

So, neat freaks, from a corporate perspective, are very efficient. This essentially means an average-intellect person can perform above their potential, because they employ effective mechanisms.

Slobs, however, constantly stimulate their brains. "Where did I leave my wallet?" becomes a memory game/puzzzle. This constant stimulation might have a beneficial effect on their thinking process.

As I have matured (approaching the "silver" years) I have likewise noticed what appears to be a higher occurence of dementia in "neat freaks" as opposed to "slobs." Again based on pure speculation, I might presume that the constant mind stimulation a "slob" requires to function in life may do something to delay the onset of dementia (Alzheimer's, for instance), but again, I cannot support this observation with actual cases and numbers.

Although my observations appear to give credence to the practice of being a slob, frankly, I cannot advocate it. There are too many times when you must absolutely find something that's required NOW, and/or the sloppy organization may spill over into areas of food preparation and hygiene (but I've not observed as much of that as I would expect). Frankly, I think it's better to stay organized and make it a point to do puzzles and mind exercises...

Remember - this is purely speculative based upon my own personal observations.

They say an untidy desk indicates an untidy mind. I wonder what that says about people with an empty desk?

-Attributed to Einstein.

Seriously, though, organised wins every time. There is always room in life for sponteneity, but only those who start out with a plan can be spontaneous. Look at the Cold War. Who won? The capitalists. Was this because they had the better ideologies, leaders, and popular support? No- clearly it was because they were better organised.

I dont think there are any advantages of being disorganised unless you are really lucky. Think about it, if you didnt organise the things in your life such as daily expenses, career, lifestyle and even where you live then you would be a bum on the street begging for money and drinking yourself to sleep (maybe just a little exageration haha) life is about organisation you do it subconciously by thiking about what youre going to do today or thinking of the questions you ask on yahoo answers. Some people pay others to organise their bussinesses and even lives.

I have noticed that organised people usually expect the same of others, and get themselves stressed out when others are disorganised.
The other side of the coin is the disorganised person who creates chaos for the organised person.
The winner is usually the disorganised person, because they will always be that way.

It is said that if u were strictly potty trained then u grow up to be an organised person. However, if u were left to play with your faeces then u grow up to be messy and disorganised.
So in a way, an advantage of being organised is knowing that u never played with your own sh*t as a kid.....
