Maybe the question is why ask on a site like this. Dont they have any friends?! Or maybe they like retribution and can't wait fot the scummy to write their piece.

People are naturally curious, some people are so curious they are rude...
many times a person will ask or assume that a person is gay if that person does not fit their own personal idea of how someone straight "should" act/look/think etc.
A persons sexuality is very personal and should not be brought up for discussion unless the individual choose to discuss it, whether they are gay or not!

Well, it wasn't immediately obvious to me that I was gay as I knew I liked girls but I'd read in a magazine that it can just be a teenage phase. As a result it took me years to come to terms with it. Perhaps people who ask if they are gay want confirmation & a little bit of support from other gay people. I think we should be a bit more compassionate towards others who are having difficulties with it & not get annoyed with them. Sexuality is not simple to everybody. There are a lot of factors involved, such as where you live, your upbringing, religion, views of family & friends etc. Sometimes it's not easy to admit you are gay & people often wish they weren't as it would be easier to conform to societies expectations. I spent years wishing I wasn't gay, but now I am glad. I wouldn't want to be anything other than me. I have finally accepted myself.

Sometimes it's not obvious to the person themselves.. it can be a long process to realising who you are attracted to..
Because of people just assuming they are straight because that's the norm or because they even have internalised homophobia.
It took me about a year to come to terms and accept that I was gay.
Sometimes people get so fed up of trying to work it out, or so desperate to understand themselves that they really just want to be told once and for all- so they ask.. even though they know in their hearts that no one else can answer that question..

Those who ask that question are very unsure of themselves, and they need a comfirmation. I think they are scared of what they already know, and are hoping that others will give them a hopeful thought that their feelings and thoughts are "normal" and that it's ok to be straight and have gay intuitions.

This happen with those who are not quite sure yet of their own sexuality. Maybe their upbringing, family background, social environment... are more heterosexual orientated or their understanding is not mature enough to consider it being acceptable being gay.......

I'm a psychologist and have never been asked this by anyone. And people ask me to tell them who they are all day, which I don't .
Perhaps typical of the group you mix with?
Good luck! Rob
