Everything Luke did for the Rebellion, he did for his own 'personal' reasons. Maybe not at first, but certainly that became his goal as the events conspired. His only interest was in turning Darth Vader back to the 'light' side so he would have a father again. It just so happens that this would also help out the causes of the Rebellion. I think Luke was very close to turning to the dark side himself and probally would have if not for Vader turning back first. Han Solo fought for the Rebellion for several reasons, imho, one being his new-found love for a certain Princess. The other being he just really needed to find his own 'place' in the galaxy where his own rebellioness would finally matter to the powers that be. Whereas Luke was quiet selfish in his destiny, Han was anything but selfish in his own destiny. Princess Leia truely had the heart and passion to bring the Empire down. Her personal reasoning for this quest against the Empire was never fully explained. We know she was adopted but did she? It wasn't personal for her. She was fighting for justice throughout the galaxy. But what really drove her? I don't think she was just a bord, spoiled Princess and this was her charity. I believe she had real reasons for bringing the Empire down, but will we ever know those reasons. Maybe her own midi-chlorines were unknowingly drawing her to go up against the Empire (Darth Vader, to be exact) and maybe she didn't even know why herself, she just knew she 'had' to do it. Then she meets Luke and is even more drawn into her own destiny. We simply just don't know much about what Leia was thinking or what was really driving her to lead this rebellion. I'm not sure she even knew. I think Yoda flaked out after Vader came to be. Why did he and Obi-wan hide out for 18 years waiting on Luke to grow up and save them? Why didn't they form a plan of their own to maybe assasinate the Emperor? They could've saved thousands of lives! They could've saved whole planets from the wrath of vader! Instead, they ran away and hid to wait on Darth's own offspring to save them. I think that was pretty weak and wish there was an explaination for their inability to react in a way that would've saved lives throughout the Galaxy. Darth Vader killed thousands of people. But Yoda (especially) holds some of that responcibility, imho. In all his self-praise and greatness, he was really nothing more than a coward. Or was he the smartest in the galaxy? ;-)

He was a whiny farm boy at first but destroying the Death Star made him a hero of the Rebellion. He wasn't so whiny afterwards. And yes, Han Solo is WAY cooler than Luke ever was.

Whiny farm boy. But I suppose he's got a lot to whine about - issues with his father etc - every man's problem, right?
Han Solo is much cooler but I don't think either of the characters is at all well rounded.
Han Solo is cooler because Harrison Ford played him.

Initially a whiny farm boy who knew nothing of the greater universe, then grew into a Jedi and eventually became the first of a new generation. Along the way he became the hero of the Rebellion and a figurehead for the New Republic and a new Jedi Order that were seeking to maintain peace and order throughout the galaxy.
He may once have thrown a tantrum but with the force at his disposal he would become able to throw a Tauntaun instead!

He is the hero of the rebellion (and if you read the books much more as the Empire was not the ultimate threat). Keep in mind Luke was a teenager when introduced and like all teens, he was prone to throw tantrums. As he matured, he wasn't as whiny.

Well, he did start off whiny and eventually became a hero. It's the classic hero of a thousand faces storyline; callow youth leaves home, goes on life changing journey, becomes better person at journey's end.
Though, if I was Yoda, I would a smacked Luke silly in 'The Empire Strikes Back'. "Mouth you must shut and ship you get out of swamp now, beeyotch!"

I thought he was incredibly whiny. It didn't help that he was played by a terrible actor. His father wasn't much different with the whining in Attack of the Clones but the actor was much improved by Revenge of the Sith.
But in the end, he was one of the heroes of the rebellion.
But I agree that Han was much cooler.
