There's a difference, I think, between being a good politician, and being a popular one. I refuse to believe that any endeavour "requires" one to be immoral, brown-nosing, etc. On the other hand, I understand all too well that decisions are made by compromise and hard work, and how that can look to the person on the outside. I lead a team of 11 people to make ethical decisions that support sound business practice for an international company. Believe me, it is not easy. It is a thankless position. It has been said that in evey town of 100,000, there is one person who is capable of being a Supreme Court justice. It does not mean that person is the one who does it; it is the person who could do it. That's not a lot of people: 1 in 100,000. And while there is a difference between the judicial and the legislative branch, I think the same statistics apply. Given what I know now of my own ability to guide and shape decisions and policy, persuade people, and look at issues from all sides before suggesting a course of action; yes, I think I could do it if I found myself in that particular position of leadership. Would I be the 1 person in 100,000 "good" at it? Only time would tell. Would I be popular enough for re-election? Most likely not- I'm not the type to win popularity contests. Would I do a good job, and take my responsibility seriously- absolutely.

It depends what you mean by ideology / principles.
There comes a time in any sort of management, whether it's a whole country or a small business, where decisions have to be made on pragmatic grounds, which might not fit in with strict principles. It's the danger of letting ideology become strict dogma, which might leave one unable to react to changing circumstances.
To be a successful MP, you have to be part of a party. To be part of a party, you necessarily have to compromise. Every MP probably has to make that decision - to be ideologically pure in the wilderness, or to make a difference but be prepared to bend.
I think I could adapt, although not without a lot of soul-searching. And if I'd been a Labour MP? If breaking point hadn't come before, I would have broken ranks and rebelled on the Trident vote.

It's all very relative I think. I don't think there is such a thing as good politician. I could agree there have been some great leaders in history, but I'd say that those would've been great on any field of life - just strong charismatic characters. The rest - the vast majority - just do their job. For some - they are good (and they vote for them), for some - they are bad (and they don't vote at all). That's why I guess every country deserves it's ruler. If all things you describe are part of "good politician's" character, then all of them are "very good". Is that so? Well, I guess for Cherie Blair her husband is the greatest. Maybe even she is right. It is all relative.

No. I have certain principles which I would not be prepared to compromise. My integrity, on a personal level, is adaptable, but if I stood up as a politician and agreed to a party manifesto, then I would be unwilling to renegue on the promises which had brought my party (and me) into power.

I couldn't do something I didn't believe in to keep everyone happy. I have a tendancy to say what I feel anyway and my mouth always gets me into trouble! If I felt really passionately about something then I would definately not shut up. I think politics are a load of b*llco*ks anyway, they definately seem to be out only to think about themselves. Maybe all us honest, like minded people ought to start our own independant party that refuses to give in to political muscle and actually does some good for our own!

The questions as well as the answers indicate clearly how lowly we think of politicians.
However, one of the facts of course is that none of us over here who enjoys interactions with a lot of people across the world can qualify to make a good politician.... simply because politicians do not interact on Internet etc. and that too with hidden names... politicians have to come out in the open and interact with all sorts of people face to face. I am just pointing out one aspect.... there are quite a lot of such issues involved that make us, the participants of this forum in this section called Philosophy quite ineligible and unqualified to become a reasonably good or successful politician.

what gets me down is, while one is going in a courtroom room each and every thing is showmanship to make one think of all is above board they even provide one a bible to swear to inform the reality and however the main considered necessary interest of taking good care of the rustic is executed by employing liers and scoundrels. cameras and listening instruments would desire to stick to those people each and every the place they pass. the politicians are britains maximum wanted criminals that no-one is chasing.

I would NOT make a good politician.
I do not posess the ability to lie to someone with a stright face while at the same time, I am stabbing them in the back!
And when someone comes up with an idea I will listen to it, but if I think it is a stupid idea, I will call it a STUPID Idea. (or WORSE, lol)
