I have a 7 wk old boxer i lover her to death. we bought her in germany where it is illgeal to alter the dog in any way (i.e cropping and docking). My husband is going back to the states in june and wants to bring her with for the 5 days to get her tail and ears done. Personally i love her long tail But in order to win this argument i need some good reasons why she can not go back to the states for 5 days and have all this cosmetic stuff done. Any Good solid reasons please help i love her tail and want her to keep it.

Just say no... dont do it... let the dog be the dog it was made to be.....its so cosmetic and some states are trying to make it illegal..hope these sites help you out...smile

here are some sites to check out:

EDIT: dont be haters!! it is true there are some states lobying to make it illegal.. just like this person stated its illegal in Germany so we here in the US need to get onboard....let the dog be the dog it was made to be.. its a cruel surgery and I have seen it done and seen the dogs afterwards for check ups and YES it hurts!! there are nerves and such..not to mention all the bleeding... . so lets go dock your ears and cut off a few things off your body just because it doesn't meet quality/breed standards or just because we want to!!!!!

she's way too old to have her tail docked. Tail docking is usually done when the dog is only a few days old. When the dog is older, a vet will only dock for medical reasons.
And by June she'll be too old to have her ears cropped. Ear cropping should be done between 9-11 weeks of age. If your husband takes her and finds a vet that is willing to do it, the ears probably wont stand properly because the cartilege may already have set since she's older. Also with ear cropping, the ears will have to be taped and re-taped. If you don't know how to do this properly yourselves, you may have a hard time trying to find someone who will, since its illegal where you live.

I think those reasons are good enough not to do it.

By the time your husband arrives with the dog to the states, he will be too old to crop and dock, most vet's would'nt touch him as it would be unnecessary pain and those who would are butcher's just in it for the money. If someone does the ears, it is unlikely at that age they will stand straight and will be expensive for something not necessary that may not take. Save the money for the first year of shots, monthly heartworm medication, a good and knowledgable vet. If he is a pet you will love him with his tail and floppy ears. In the states, you can not show a dog in competition without the tail and ears done, but I see that as a potentential change. That has been a hot topic between the AKC and others. Love the dog as he is as he will love you unconditionally.

It is too late to get the tail docked. That needs to be done by the time the puppy is 3 days old..as for cropping ears it has to be done before the puppy is 16 weeks old preferably no later then 12 weeks of age. Also it is increasingly more difficulat to find a vet that does cropping at all let alone one that does a good job.It will take longer then 5 days to find a vet that does cropping and one that does a good correct job and can show you how to tape correctly. Also will need more then 5 days for follow up exam, etc. Cropping is NOT endorsed by the AVMA/AAHA nor is it taught at any of the vet schools.

In other words by the time June gets here the puppy will be to old to be cropped.
Cropping of ears 1) has to be done correctly 2) has to be taped correctly for a length of time that can vary from as little as a month to as long as over a year and then there is no guarantee they will stand correctly.

Oh my.... tails are usually done within 3 days of birth. Having it done at 5 months is going to be VERY painful. Most vets will not dock a tail on an older pup/dog unless there is an injury.

Finding a vet that will crop ears at 20+ wks is going to be hard and the later the ears are done, the less chance of them standing. Ears are typically done somewhere between 8-12 wks. I have seen ears done at 16 wks, with a long struggle to get them to stand, but they did.

1st. God - or nature - made her like this. Who are you to alter her? And why? Isn't she good enough like this? Well, sorry, but that's who she is!
2nd. Would you mutilate the dog you love Cut parts of her body, while she doesn't understand why and just suffers the pain?
3rd. Even if you would consider doing it at home, how cruel would someone be to subject the poor animal to a long air travel, twice in 5 days, and make her travel - probably in the cold and thin air luggage compartment - especially after a surgery? I would make my pets travel only if it was crucial, eg. I had to move to another country for a year! Let alone 2 travels in 5 days, operated and in pain, for a small puppy!
4th. If you don't agree, you have the veto right! Just don't let him do it. You like her like this and that's that!
5th. don't forget that this surgery is dangerous for infections etc., especially at this age.

I don't understand why you should. It's considered cosmetic surgery, and from what I understand is very, very, painful and unnecessary.
