I think it's just that, curiosity. I'm sure you could have a wind up toy fish in there swimming and they would be interested just the same. My last cat used to sit on my computer desk and chase the cursor around on the screen when I'd move it lol.

I would say natural instinct tells them to chase fish in a tank. Cats tend to like to chase anything smaller than them that can move around freely. Everything for them turns into a hunting game.
Good luck

They love moving objects. When mine were babies and could fit on the desk they used to chase the mouse pointer around on the computer screen. Now they chase laser pointers and reflections of light from watch faces on the walls and stuff like that. My daughter has a mini-mirrored disco ball in her room and when the cats go in there on a sunny day they go wild.

I don't think it's because they know it's something they'll like to eat, it's just because cats are very curious if it moves they HAVE to check it out.

For instance it's snowing here right now and my male cat is sitting in the window watching the snow fall and putting his feet on the window trying to catch the flakes.

Sudden, small movements mark fish out as natural prey for a cat of any age.

Instinct. I don't how they have it but they do. It's gotta be the smell.
