Actually it depends on how long you chew. It stimulates the production of saliva and increases salivary flow. Saliva is a natural buffering agent which washes the teeth and neutralizes some of the acid produced by bacteria. Although chewing gum containing sugar can cause cavities the increased production of saliva can rinse some of the sugar residues away.

Chewing gum can cause bodily harm. Especially when you're chewing like a donkey next to some highly annoyed person.

If you gonna chew, please do so with your mouth closed!

Plain & simple if you chew sugar free gum, especially after a meal, it will neutralise acid attacks on your teeth which reduces the occurance of erosion on the dentition. If you do it constantly all day everyday you may well wear down your teeth. Moderation is the key!
