that non-violence is possible in all situations, it may be the ideal but not always possible. So, do you think that the unwillingness to meet senseless violence with violence is a sign of morality?

A rabid dog wanders into your backyard and is right next to your daughter. You have a gun in your hand. What do you? No-brainer. Shoot the dog. Is that senseless violence in your book? Not in mine...

Though I'm a humanist and pacifist in my heart, I can only hope a world without violence would be possible. And where is the limit of violence. Is violence only physical?
Humans are, if you look at nature, one of the most violent animals on earth. Violence is a necessary tool in evolution to eat and defend offspring etc. Violence by and between humans comes from abuse of power, stupidity, ignorance, and not being able to communicate in a normal way, and on the other hand from those who need to defend themselves against the first group of people and they will alway accuse each other of having given the first strike.
So no, there will never come an end to violence.

Yes, I really believe non-violence is a viirtue.

Actually being attacked by a person on drugs made me realize we are all vunerable to violence when we least expect it as I did, walking with my tiny grandson.

Yes I called the police and they chased and caught him. Witnesses were there too and they took him to jail. The states attorney asked me to get my bills together and they were going to make sure he was punished severly and get jail time. I choose not to comply with them.

I really forgave the criminal and really prayed for him. I didn't even go to court to testify that he was the attacker. In my estimation he had enough on his plate from the Police such as; addiction, fleeing, attacking me, speeding and drug possession. I figured if I was a so called Christian; why would I kick him when he was down? wwjd?

It is the parallel to God's love. His Son Jesus (however you believe and worship) was sent to us to show us the way the truth and the light; Forgive others the way you want the Lord to forgive us!

Forgiveness is now a part of my moral fiber and I hope I can keep it that way, after all, I am not perfect and who knows tomorrow; In a knee jerk reaction; I may wound or kill the next attacker when I defend myself. I pray that I defend myself without hurting someone that is going through evil. Eye for an eye? No eye justice for me, but understanding, and trying to love others and acheive as you say morality. Blessings on you.

Mahatma Gandhi advised the Brits to surrender to Hitler in order to avoid violence. Gandhi also thought the Jews should have submitted to the Holocaust without resistance so as to avoid violence.

Gandhi was a very moral person but it's a good job that Churchill was the PM rather than Gandhi.

Non-violence is a fundamental virtue every one should possess. We have got the supreme example of non-violence practiced by Mahatma Gandhi in liberating India from foreign rule. There is no better weapon than non-violence in the present day world. But true followers of non-violence are rare. Non-violence doesn't mean desisting from retaliation. Even in thought you should practice non-violence. You should not hate any body in this world, even those who hurt you by all means. nagarajan.

Morality must always be tempered with wisdom. It would be wonderful if violence no longer existed but as long as there are people who live by their emotions there will always be those who hate, or feel jealous. That in itself means the ideal of nonviolence can never be met. We can only hope to keep our responses within the realm of reason rather than retaliation.

Not really a sense of morality; more of a sense of responsibility. Violent people are often very, very stupid and it's easy to talk them into doing more harm to themselves than inflicting it by yourself.

You don't have to have a sense of right and wrong to want to avoid a fight. It's called having a brain. Backing off is sometimes a remarkably clever thing to do, saves you rolling around on the floor with an idiot. It also lowers yourself. But once struck, by all means, strike back twice as hard!

Since you have posted this in the R&S section, I can only answer you with a Bible quote. Matthew 5:9 says "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." Jesus set very high standards for us to meet, often times so high that without him it is not possible. What is impossible with men is possible with God, for nothing is truly impossible for God. Because our sin nature makes us prone to violence Jesus shed his blood that we might call upon that shed blood to cover that sin nature and give us a fighting udgments, and his way past finding out!" (Romans 11:33) Becachance against the wiles of the devil. We cannot condone violence just because it is a part of mankind's fallen nature. God allows for violence to exist in this world so that we might come to see God's glory through the cross of his beloved Son, the most hideous act of violence against a single person every perpetrated in any period of history. God says in the Bible : "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judments, aqnd his way past finding out!: (Romans 11:33)
