Why is it that certain subjects are considered taboo? Surely if you openly speak about a subjects it stops being a taboo, or dose that make it more controversial?? Confused I am?

I know literally what the word means, what I mean is if you start to talk about an issue does it stop being a taboo? And when does a taboo stop being a taboo? For example the word f**k was a taboo word, but now its been replaced with the C word. Why does this happen. (not trying to be offensive)

I think most families have certain subjects that are taboo in the home. You would think that talking it out would make it more mainstream and not taboo anymore but that doesn't work always. It really depends on the people involved and how open or close minded they are. I think there are many subjects today that we talk openly about that used to be taboo in our society and in that aspect, talking and getting information out did work to make these subjects no longer taboo. Even so, you will always be able to find someone or somewhere that still considers even these things taboo today.

Taboo is a cultural or religious custom that does not allow people to do, use or talk about a particular thing as people find it offensive or embarrassing.

It is also a general agreement not to do something or talk about something.

The avoidance of certain words or sounds for ritual or analogous reasons. In ancient China, the personal names of one's father and one's ruler were taboo, and various substitutions were used instead. The social and situational specifics of this practice have not been carefully studied, but even as presently understood, taboo avoidance can be a help in dating texts, or certain manuscript copies of texts. The more general term is Avoidances.

A subject is taboo when others are not comfortable to discus it. It may make them feel too guilty or the subject is too true and they don't want to face up to it.

taboo subjects are those that cannot be discussed "at will". you think seriously before bringing them up, and only in front of certain people.

taboos can be "part time" taboos.
discussing your sexual fantasies at church, for instance.
discussing them at a retreat for married couples might be the perfect time, however.
