I have TMJ and wouldn't open my completely for a yawn if my life depended on it...PAIN!! hurts too much and the solutions to TMJ are nonexistent. Have you talked to your dentist? Only a dentist can start you on the path to help, if they can't help you. If your jaw is making noise, I wouldn't open it completely, it could get stuck. Mine did, it was stuck not completely open or shut, couldn't move it. Needed a chiropractor to work the joint in the jaw to loosen it, so I could move it again. Use warm compresses for pain. Moist heat, like a hot,wet washcloth, not a heating pad. good luck! this may be a matter you don't get answers to that are easy... I've had this since I was 17 and I'm 36...not getting much better. I would also avoid crunchy foods like granola bars and peanut brittle... this could aggravate your problem.
