Think of the tattoo artist as well, an artist. You are getting an original creation, a first edition, a one of a kind, permanant addition to the temple of you. Shouldn't that warrant a tip? (Especially if you are so pleased that you'll want to come back? and you wouldn't want them to deside half-done is ok?)
More to the point, if you tip a waitress and they aren't leaving a permanant impression on your body, why wouldn't you tip a tatto artist who is? :P

My tattoo artist is known around the world for the type of tattoo that I got (portrait) and yes I did tip (NO not Miami Ink). My tattoo was only 3x2 and it cost me $450. For this tattoo - because of who my artist was, the fact that their studio was super friendly and helpful and the fact that I had such a great experience, I tipped $150. He is doing a $200 addition on to the tattoo for free this Friday. I intend to tip again even though I am not getting charged for the addition.

You are saying thank you to them for their artistic ability, and for their skills and for helping to make your whole tattoo experience a positive one. If given that option, I would tip but some do and some don't...

Huh-I've never thought about it. I have been seeing the same guy in Quebec City for three years, both at his own shop and at the tattoo shows in Bangor, Maine. The rate he charges is not set in stone; rather he and I discuss the piece, how many hours it will take, and settle on a price. Paying a tip after that seems pointless-if I had wanted to pay $50 more, why didn't I just say that at the beginning? I DO refer everyone who comments on my sleeves to him, whether I am in Quebec, Maine, or even California! So, I guess it depends on the relationship you have with your artist.

I didn't bc they make a lot of money from you getting the tattoo. Say you get a tattoo for $150 that takes 2 hours and they have to pay 20% for booth rental. $30 goes to booth rental so they just made $60 an hour. My husband tipped the guy $10 for his tattoo that only took 5 minutes and paid $50 for the tattoo. So that guy, assuming booth rental is 20%, made $50 in 5 minutes bc the booth rental was $10 then you add the $10 tip to make the full $50.

Yes you should. You tip the pizza delivery guy who just brings you a $10.00 pizza, why not tip the person that is putting ink in your skin for life. I have known my artist for 17yrs, and I have 24 tatts, so when I'm getting something small I might not tip, but on a bigger piece that takes a few hours then yes I deffinitely tip.

I do. I only have 2 tattoos, but I tipped both times (One I had to get touched up, and I tipped for that too). to me its like saying...thank you for taking your time, and doing a great job on this thing that's going to be on my body for the rest of my life" I dont think its about the money, but it shows that you appreciate the work they did on you, and the time they took to do it.

Do you tip the barber? If you want a good hair cut next time you do. Same for a tatoo artist.
