I genuinely don't understand the thought process involved - How exactly do they perceive that this advances whatever religious aims or ideals they may have?

Blowing up innocent people and dying in the process is a barbaric act and can not be justified nor understood by a normal person.
However blowing up hundreds of thousands of innocent people from high above in the sky without getting killed in the process is not considered barbaric and it is even viewed as smart.
During WWII thousands of German bombers and flying fortresses would bomb whole cities and wipe out innocent people in Europe. This tactic culminated with Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We can only guess what the next step will be for mankind.
Is it really necessary to understand the thought process of a deranged man? It is just sad to see mankind having reached such barbaric heights of behaviour.

Genarally,any extremist is dogmatic,in the case of islamic extremists they start first making brainwashing for the innocent people,and you can see that only the youngs are always being brainwashed.From the lessons they have,some illustions like going immediatly to paradise after you die.Religious extremists;muslims,juish or chrestians either they do not understand the aims of their relgion or they are psycologicaly ILL.

Not just the Muslims ..... the Christians fanatics, The Hindus fanatics, the whichever fanatics too ..... read the history textbooks .... turn to crusaders, tamil tigers and other religion based violents :P
