In a few weeks I am picking up a new riding lawnmower. I have a pickup and access to a trailer at work. The trailer is pretty low, has an all wood floor, and metal bars on the front and sides, and a drop down metal framed gate with mesh covering that looks like it was designed to handle the weight, pretty much made for the job I need to do. But no tie down anchors. As long as I take precautions to keep the mower from rolling, will it be OK just sitting there? Or do I need to figure out a way to tie it down?

Am afraid to do any modifications to the trailer. I will look the trailer over tomorrow, maybe there is something existing that can be used for tieing things down, but I don't remember anything, been awhile. Maybe I can hook some tie-down straps to the edge of the trailer deck. The tailgate locks pretty positively, so not worried about it leaving the trailer, just rolling around and getting damaged.

Get some nylon ratchet straps. You can get them at Walmart or any parts store. They are pretty cheap. Use one at each end of the mower to keep it from bouncing around on the trailer.

Riding Mower Trailer

Taking precautions is a good start but if the mower somehow leaves the trailer, you are responsible for all damages. Buy the ratchet straps and tie it down. You could take some 2 x 4's and screw them down in front of the front wheels and behind the rear wheels. Then place a strap so it will pull the mower towards the front of the trailer. When it gets almost tight, put another strap around the rear of the mower and pull it tight. You may want to put a piece of wood between the mower and trailer in front to avoid damage to the mower when stopping.

In Indiana, it is against the law to have a piece of equipment on a trailer and not have it secured in some way. My suggestion is to take a ratchet strap and secure it to the front axle of the mower, and secure the other end to the tongue of the trailer. Then secure another from one side of the trailer and then over the area you step through to the other side of the trailer. This will keep it from bouncing.

I hope that helps

Baron Von....You will need to tie it down, to stop it moving backwards and sideways.
A wedge slipped under the tyres, front and back is also a good idea.
You will be surprised how much a load not tied down, can bounce over a small bump.
You may have to get a welder to weld 4 hooks to the sides to use as tie downs.
