The brain burns about 130-150 grams of carbs (~500 to 600 calories) per day. The rest of your resting metabolic rate is dependent on your muscle mass and other factors such as thyroid activity.
A good rule of thumb to estimate your resting metabolic rate is to use the old McArdle & Katch formula which is:
Your lean mass (lbs) x 13.8 or your lean mass (kg) x 30.4
The other formula by McArdle & Katch is:
BMR= 370 + (21.6 x lean mass in kg)
or BMR= 370 + (9.82 x lean mass in lbs)
To calculate your lean mass use the following formula:
weight -(weight x percentage bodyfat divided by 100)

Your Caloric Needs
As you now know, there are three main factors involved in calculating how many calories your body needs per day: your BMR, physical activity and the thermic effect of food.
The second factor in the equation, physical activity, consumes the next highest number of calories. Physical activity includes everything from making your bed to jogging. Walking, lifting, bending, and just generally moving around burns calories, but the number of calories you burn in any given activity depends on your body weight. Click here for a great table listing the calories expended in various physical activities and for various weights.
The thermic effect of food is the final addition to the number of calories your body burns. This is the amount of energy your body uses to digest the food you eat -- it takes energy to break food down to its basic elements in order to be used by the body. To calculate the number of calories you expend in this process, multiply the total number of calories you eat in a day by 0.10, or 10 percent. Depends on many things, for instance: your gender; male tend to burn more calories than female. Also, depends on how active you are and how much muscle mass your body has. There are many other factors e.g the state of your health, what you eat, just to name a few.
