It's to give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness in case you must make an emergency landing. On average it takes a person's eyes 15-30 minutes to adjust from a bright environment to a darkened one. By dimming the lights your eyes have time to adjust to the dim light, allowing you to see better if you have to evacuate the plane.
The lights are only turned off if you're landing at night. If you're landing during the day, the lights are on.

Just Jess is right - it's so that your eye's adjust to the dark, making it easier to follow the in-floor lighting leading to the emergency exits in event of an emergency!
Have a guess as to why the cabin staff advise you to adopt the brace position in an emergency.... It's not a pleasant thought once you realise why they request this.

There is only one reason. That is to get your eyes adjusted to dim light so that you can see in the -very unlikely event- of an emergency landing.
Any answer that says different is completely wrong. Some of the guesses are so wild that they're alomst a hazard themsleves

They turn down the lighting fixtures and make you open the abode windows so as that if there have been to be a crash, fire etc you be able to work out outdoors your window to work out a fire, be able to work out extra clever interior the plane itself as to the place the risk-free exits are etc - if the lighting fixtures have been on there could be too plenty glare extremely interior the night to work out outdoors the abode windows, as you already know in case you have been on any night flights.

So that all the available electricity being produdec is being directed to the required components at that time, so that if one electrical system fails, there is still plenty of electricity being delivered inmediatly and at full force. Landing is the most crucial moment of a flight, so you want all availabe resources to be used in aiding on the landing.

i think the reason is ,to minimise the risk, that in case of a bad landing, and the movement of the plane, and the possibility of broken electrical wires, who would be a lesser risk ,if they are not on the board.
another reason, is by switching off the lights its making passengers more aware, and alert ,and make them sit in the right position, during landing procedures.

the interior lights are turned off when coming in to land for one simple reason, this is so you can only see the ground and if an emergency were to arise you would be able to see what is goiog to KILL you. ........

Its so people settle down and put all there belongings away so that they pay attention in case there is a problem during landing... Takeoffs and Landings are the most dangerous time of the flight.

I may be wrong but this is my theory.
They turn the lights off, so the control tower aren't confused by a whole load of lights on a runway!! Simple idea really?

I don't know - but must be tied to the reason you can not use cell phones on planes as well as the reason for giving you the smallest bag of nuts I have ever seen......a conspiracy? A joke? I think not
