I want to know if the Chinese family surname, for example Lee, and let's say i see another Chinese family that i dont know, with the same surname, Lee.

Are they related somehow? because you do know that we have to follow our family name and they could be related somehow a long long time ago and didnt know it.

well as those are good answers we have another problem, when people immigrate they can change their name to something more america, instead of the more difficult last names they are given options to shorten or to go with a lee or li, you would need to go back a long way to find out depending on when the family came here.
however Lee has been around a long long time. I would just start tracing the family tree's with asians should not be as hard as american's since they normally record there ancestors.

Possible. THat is why chinese seldom allowed marriage of the same surname. What i heard from my grandparents is that there are high possibility that you could be related and the worst part was that the child born might be affected due to the relation.

most likely not, its based on how its written anyhow , not spoken. Li or Lee probably has 100 different ways to write it. Thats why its important to know the writting of it

Possibly.But, most likely not. It's like Smith and Smith in America. It also depends on what character the last name is.
