Neither do Baptists...we don't bow down to man made objects. (Recovering Catholic)
Genuflect - They kneel down on one knee for a brief moment and then bless themselves. However, you don't genuflect if there is no host in the Tabernacle in the Catholic church. (You know when there is no host in the Tabernacle because they leave the door open.) So, in this case, since there is no Tabernacle and no host you would not genuflect.

Well as far as I know genuflection is a Catholic practice and a Catholic would not be genuflecting in a mormon church or temple.

The LDS church, unlike other Christian religons, have not adopted the cross to represent them. We do not use the cross on books, buildings, and other things because the cross on calvary symbolizes the death of Jesus Christ. Rather than put all focus on His death, we would rather put our focus on the fact that He lives, and is ressurected. This may have seemed a little awkward to the LDS members there because this is not a practice that we participate in. I really wouldn't worry about it, though, it's just something that an LDS member would be familiar with.

Yeah I believe that catholics are only suppose to genuflect in a catholic church where Jesus is present in the Tabernacle.

It may have been awkward just because LDS don't do that. We don't do signs of the cross or have crosses on our church houses or temples. We want to focus on Christ's resurrection and life, not his death. We also believe the Atonement was made in the Garden of Gethsemane and His sacrifice was made on the cross...
Don't worry though, no one will "look down" on you or anything, we respect other's beliefs.

I guess I'm hopelessly uninformed, but shouldn't there be some sort of altar and cross/crucifix or something, when you genuflect?
But, no, we don't do that. You must do what you believe is honoring God.

Not every Church behaves as the Catholic church does. Baptists, Protestants, Anglican, JW's don't cross themselves either. It may be time for you to go to other churches to see how other denominations worship.

ex mormon here. Mormons don't belive in the in the cross. I live in Salt Lake City. I wear my cross to work all my mormons coworkers give dirty looks. Plus all of extended family (who are mormon) don't like it when we wear our crosses to family things. but all should read 1 corinthians 1;18 which states; for the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. but to us who are being saved it is power of god.
