Yes, it is a tough question!

Because it involves 1, +, and 1

To give answer to it, you need to know precise states of all three elements!

(1) is appearing twice and (+) once

Together it relates a a principle of combining " two equal (1)s " as 'a-number'

It is tough in a sense that 'unless and until we prove 'both (1)s are exactly equal and a (+) sign relate to combining two different whole number states as a-sum' concerned answer is hypothetical!Truth is that a (+) sign relates "sum of three before quadrant units of a 2D matrix"-position in a forth quadrant of plus sign which is true to all zero-start 2D-matrix positions!

In nature, even two atoms of a-material does not match in all respects.! So exact equality of two (1)s is a guess! Further scientific meaning of a (+) sign is not known to most users of computation!

Scientific answer to a question differ from an answer based on a public awareness! 1+1=2 supports absolute basics of number system! It is so tough! Similarly an understanding of a-zero too, which is (1-1=0)

'A public awareness based answer' hardly involve said scrutiny of facts and general public will say 1+1 = 2. An absolute basic thinking skill of a person shall guide general public to say it confidently! Siad skill is most apparent in Vedic Mathematics!

To me 1+1 is 'any of the two following number-expressions' because they all relate 'real-number states'!

1) 1+1= 1.9 ...any number of times 9

2) 1+1= 2,0...any number of times 0 and1

Reason for that is, I am yet to grasp two exactly equal number-states. At least an infinitesimal difference exists in between any two nearest numbers-stated and 'science of computing' (including Vedic Maths) has regarded said fact!

I regard said question as one of the toughest to be answered in whole history of mathematics!
