Notecards help most times, especially if it's just for rote memorization. If you'd like to keep vocab words in your head for much longer than just for your upcoming test/quiz, however, then try mnemonics. You'll probably remember the word better if you associated it with something you found funny or weird.
For example:
Nosegay - a bouquet
Think, "whenever my nose is happy (nosegay), it turns into a bouquet".
So, just take parts of the word and make a little story or association with it. Granted, I know that this can take awhile especially if you're studying, like, 30 words, but if you want to remember the words for the long run, this might be worth the investment. And I know it might seem a little fruity at first, but it gets you to study actively instead of just robotically flipping through flashcards.
It's your call. Whatever you choose, good luck!

create vocab cards, get an index card and on the front side put the word then on the back but the definiton and a sentence (it works best if you can find the vocab word in a book or something)
