Yes you can. Most ppl don't know and the recruiters will use scare tactics to make you know aware of the fact you can actually get out of your contract all the way up til the day you leave for bootcamp. That is when you will have your official swearing in...

I do believe it's possible.

Hubby signed for active duty (delayed entry) and then we met. He was going to switch to reserve - but since I was scared (he's a great guy - and that scared me) I encouraged him to stay active duty. He's Army however - not sure how it works with Marines.

Say you changed your mind. Ask for a mulligan. Say you did it for a term paper project. Say you were defrauded into signing. Don't tell them i said any of this. Tell them you are a pacifist all of a sudden. tell them it's come to your attention that the war was started under fraudulent reasons. Remind them your commander in chief avoided conflict by a shady deal in the reserves himself and even was AWOL on top of it Mention you forgot to tell them embarrassing things about yourself of which you would rather not go into. Start crying like a little girl with high pitched screams. And most importantly find out which countries don't have extradition treaties.

Once you are released from active duty, you automatically go into the reserves to serve out any remainder of your obligation, if any. If you fulfilled you obligation, you can volunteer for the reserves.

so? your girlfriend should NOT be the reason you make such a big decision. how do you know you won't be broken up in a year? heck, you can't be posiitve you'll last the next five months.

do what YOU want to do, not what some girl wants you to do. it's YOUR life.

Yes, but it might take some time as each unit has some guys who are waiting to do the same thing. You will probably have to wait several months or longer.

Retire from active duty but request to be part of the reserve force.

It's possible if you haven't gone to basic yet, but they're not going to want to do the paperwork.
